I loved the Burano Island painting on the wall behind!

As you explore the island, do not restrict yourself only to the main canal and the market place. The bylanes are the ones where you get introduced to a myriad of colors, beautiful wrought iron balconies, windows adorned with flowers, and locals chatting (and you can chat with them too).

Burano photography opportunities are infinite and do always remember to pose against the colorful walls!

2023 has been such a roller coaster!! So many lovely memories to cherish about. And also things where I still need to improve a lot. But that’s what makes life exciting , isn’t it?

As much as it is wonderful to watch my son grow (he is in mid-teens now), a fair portion of the year I reflected on how am I going to cope with empty-nester syndrome. There doesn’t seem to be an easy solution for it except to embrace the fact that this is inevitable.

As always, Saikat is always there to support and encourage my thoughts and so also my mother-in-law. This year, I actually watched several movies with my maa, at home and at the theaters as well.

There have been many personal moments in 2023 that I am going to cherish for a lifetime and so many learnings as well.

As I grow a year older, wiser and full with life experiences, here’s my take on the key highlights of my year in 2023.

1) Riju graduated to 11th Standard with flying colors.

Yes, I was overthinking about his studies at one point. But he did well in his final exams and I am so happy and proud about it. He has been enrolled in a Science course and guess what! He is loving this institute’s environment more than his last 10 years of school. Maybe, because it has more college-like atmosphere.😊

He has developed a knack for Physics (just like his father) and is liking the course, although it is vast and complex!

All the best to him as he treads this path!

2) Riju attended concert of an International artist he is a fan of!

Recently Steve Vai performed in a concert in Bangalore. Riju is a big time fan of his and heavily inspired by his music. It was a dream come true for him to attend his concert.

As in Riju’s own words ‘This was the best day of my life’!

So happy, he could attend the concert. It was also his first concert of an international artist.

3) Saikat 😊

If somebody asks me what is it that I absolutely love about Saikat?

It is his mind.

He is always there rock-solid, supporting, encouraging (and also course-correcting when required) me at every point in life.

I used to take pride in organizing events but he has surpassed me in every possible way. He can organize things so seamlessly! He is the Annual Sports Coordinator for our apartment complex and this year he pulled off a 500+ participant Sports event so nicely.

During our college days, he used to coach students in Physics for Joint Entrance Exams. In fact , he had quiet a big student base and many of them did extremely well in the entrance exams.

Today, despite his busy schedule, he takes out time to teach Physics and Maths to Riju. I am surprised that he remembers the subjects so well, because I can’t recollect a single word from those days!

He is in Research and Development field and on professional front, another of his patents got approved by U.S Patents Office. Another feather in his cap.

So much to talk about! But I will keep it low-key just like Saikat himself.

4) My most cherished experience – meeting my friend Aliviya in Singapore

Some of the best things in life happen unplanned.

It was just a general chit chat on Whatsapp with Aliviya and I decided to go to her place in Singapore!

Aliviya and I have studied together from 5th to 12th Standard in school and we were best friends! We were actually quite famous in school and our friends’ circle still associate us together! 😊

After 12th, I moved on with Engineering course and she took up Medicals; she always wanted to be a doctor.

Believe, this was the best decision of my life to visit her!

I can’t thank her enough to be such a wonderful host. I stayed at her place and explored Singapore together. She created the itinerary and we had the best time.

(I will be writing about my Singapore experience on this blog quite soon!)

The comfort and warmth of childhood friendship is so invaluable. I remember, we were on the topmost terrace of Supertree Observatory and was half-lying on the floor gazing at the sky! We talked and reflected about how far we have come in life. Our personal and professional experience. It was bliss!

Aliviya introduced me to all her favorite foods in Singapore, from Kaya Toast and Tea combination to Bubble Tea to the Biryani place she absolutely loves. And guess what! I loved them too!

A Big Thanks to her husband Raja as well for planning the finest dinner experiences in Singapore on all the four days!

Singapore will always remain very special to me! Thank You Aliviya for everything. I will remember this experience forever and ever!

5) My parents, friends and relatives in Kolkata

Kolkata! My soul city is slowly moving far away from me.

But, I managed to visit the city before Durga Puja this year and immersed myself in pre-pujo festivities.

I took my parents to a resort in Diamond Harbour where my father used to take us during my school days. It was like re-living old memories. It was a wonderful break away from the hustle bustle of the city. It is a small river town with mighty Ganges flowing along. We visited a few places on a Toto and settled down to heartwarming food served at the resort.

I also met my school friends at one of the roof-top bars in Kolkata and what a fun evening it was!

Priyanka, Soma, Sarani, Gargi, Senjuti – Thank You for making time for the meet-up. From appreciating Priyanka‘s fashion sense (in love with her dresses), to discussing diet tips with Gargi (I am consulting her prescribed dietician), immersing in Sarani‘s amazing sense of humor, getting to know about how exceptional Soma has been in her personal life embracing two young kids, and meeting the lovely Senjuti after sooo many years – it was a very special evening. You know I look forward to these few hours every year! You just make them so special. Thank You dearies for being there always.

Sreyoshi was not able to make to the meet-up this time, but she made my Pujo special with all the lovely sarees from her boutique! Loved all of them!

I planned a day out with my sister-in-laws (Moushumi and Didibhai) in South City Mall and had a blast with them! And also went out with my aunt (Buan Pishi) for a nice day together. You all made my day so special and memorable. Looking forward to more such day-outs in future.

All these added to the happiness of Durga Pujo festivities. I celebrated Durga Puja in Bangalore with my family.

Rupaparna and Sudakshina (my college friends) came over during Nabomi and I had a wonderful time with them. This year, we went for a pre-pujo dress shopping in Bangalore International Center and rounded it up with a wonderful lunch and hours of chatting with Sudakshina there after. Memorable!

6) And that’s a wrap!

Quiet a wonderful year 2023 has been, Thank you for everything and looking forward to 2024!

Birg Thrill Walk – Glass Floor

Switzerland is all about soaking in the beauty of nature, train rides and mountain excursions (and of course chocolates). The Birg Thrill Walk is one such spectacular attraction located in the Swiss Alps, offering visitors a breathtaking experience unlike any other.

We indulged ourselves in experiencing the thrill during our stay in Grindelwald and it was so worth it! Our son enjoyed every bit of it.  If you are exploring the Jungfrau region (Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken), then this is an activity I would recommend to add to your Swiss Itinerary.

The Thrill Walk promises to quicken the pulse of anyone who dares to cross it!

About Birg Thrill Walk, Switzerland

Birg, a summit of the Bernese Alps  boasts a mesmerizing view of the valley of Lauterbrunnen.

Birg Thrill Walk is a high-wire suspended walkway built against a steep cliff and it that offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The walkway itself is narrow and made of metal grating, allowing visitors to see the sheer drop below. It is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who are brave enough to take on the challenge, the Birg Thrill Walk is an unforgettable experience. Along the walkway, visitors will encounter several viewing platforms, as well as a thrilling suspension bridge that spans a deep ravine.

Guide To Birg Thrill Walk - Schilthorn-Murren-Switzerland

How To Reach Birg

Birg Thrill walk (2666 m) is located in Birg, a summit in Swiss Alps above the mountain village of Murren.  The village is only accessible by cable car or hiking trail. The cable car runs regularly throughout the day and is a scenic ride with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Birg was one of our intermediate destinations from Murren as we were going all up to Piz Gloria, Schilthorn, which is another cable car ride from Birg.

By car: If you are traveling by car, you will need to park your car at the base of the mountain and take the cable car up to the village.

By hiking: If you prefer to hike, several trails lead to Birg. The most popular trail is the Eiger Trail, which starts in the town of Grindelwald and takes approximately 2-3 hours to reach Birg. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.

Tickets For Birg Thrill Walk

You do not need any ticket to enjoy the Thrill Walk. The experience is free of cost .

If you are holding a Swiss Travel Pass, then the cable car ride to reach up to Birg will be 50% discounted.

Birg Thrill Walk – The Experience

Birg Skywalk - Viewing platform

As soon as you get down from the Cable car from Murren, there is a panorama terrace that offers breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. There is a cozy restaurant here.

Follow the signboard and head on to the Thrill Walk section on the side of the viewing terrace.

Birg Thrill Walk : Different Sections

The Thrill Walk has different segments consisting of rope mesh, glass and railings. The structure closely hugging the mountain, passes underneath the observation deck and the cable car and ends below the station.

The reason it adds to the thrill is that as you walk through it, you can see vertical drops of the mountains and deep ravines below your feet.

Walk along Rope Walk

Birg Thrill Walk - Rope Walk - Schilthorn-Switzerland

There is a 20 metres of glass floor, nine-metre long rope bridge with a safety net and a eight-metre crawling tunnel that complete the Thrill Walk.

A few minutes after walking along the metal bridge, the first Thrill section awaits you – the Rope Walk. As you carefully tread through it, the rope walk will dwindle increasing your heart beat!

Pause for a moment and take control of your heartbeats as you take a look around. The magnificence of Swiss Alps is right before your eyes! This section is amazing for a photo moment.

Walk Through The Glass Floor Section

Keep moving from rope walk section to the next one – the glass floor section. It might give a dizzy feeling when you look downwards. But don’t worry. It is absolutely safe!

With this, you will move the last section of the Birg Thrill Walk.

Crawl Through The Tunnel

Birg Thrill Walk - Tunnel

This section is where you need to crawl through a tunnel. It is a good experience. The only tip I will have here is not to wear too heavy clothes as the crawling gets tougher because of that.

After you come out of the tunnel, there’s a short hike back to the viewing platform where you can relax for some time before taking the cable-car all the way up to Piz Gloria, Schilthorn.

Some Tips and Points to remember for Birg Thrill walk

  1. Visitors to the Birg Thrill Walk should be prepared to take on a physical challenge, as in the last portion, you will need to crawl through a tunnel. This requires a moderate level of fitness. However, for those who are up for the challenge, the Birg Thrill Walk is an incredible experience that is not to be missed.
  2. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and gear for the mountain environment. The weather can be unpredictable, and temperatures can drop quickly at higher elevations. It is also important to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed to prevent altitude sickness. With proper preparation, reaching Birg can be a rewarding and memorable experience.
  3. One thing to consider is that the Birg Thrill Walk may not be suitable for those who are afraid of heights. It can be a bit nerve-wracking to walk on a glass pathway suspended over a cliff or a rope for that matter, so if you have a fear of heights, this may not be the activity for you. However, if you are up for the challenge, it can be an exhilarating and unique experience that you will never forget.
  4. The weather sometimes can play a bit dampener. If it rains or the weather is not supportive, the authorities close down the Thrill Walk. In that case, just take a short break at the Café on the Panorama terrace.
  5. If you are also planning to visit Piz Gloria for a lunch, I would suggest to take the Thrill Walk first.

There’s a nice café right on the viewing terrace that offers some delicious. Perfect space cozy up and have a quick bite with coffee. If it is very cold outside, then certainly you will need to have some time within the café.

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy is one of the most famous art museums in the world. It houses a vast collection of masterpieces from the Italian Renaissance period that include works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Caravaggio. If you are in Florence, then a visit to the Uffizi Gallery must be there on your itinerary.

However, Uffizi can seem to be overwhelming and hard to decipher if you are not an art lover.

To make the most of your visit and not just adding a tick-mark, you will need to prepare in advance to appreciate the masterpieces the gallery has to offer.

In this blog post, I have summarized some of the tips for visiting Uffizi Gallery and rounded it up with a list of  some selected artworks that you must not miss!

Uffizi Gallery in Florence-Italy

The Uffizi Gallery was originally built in the 16th century by the Medici family as a place to showcase their extensive art collection. Previously the office space of the Medici family, the Uffizi is an amazing piece of architecture on the edge of the Arno river in the Centre of Florence.

The Medici family of Florence, Italy, was one of the most powerful and influential families in European history. The family played a significant role in the development of art, literature, and architecture during the Renaissance period.

They commissioned works from famous artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci, and many of these works can be seen in the Uffizi Gallery today.

Here are a few tips that you can consider before planning a visit to the Uffizi Gallery.

1) Book your tickets in advance

The Uffizi Gallery is a popular tourist destination and can get very crowded. To avoid waiting in long lines, it’s best to book your tickets in advance. You can purchase them online or through a travel agency.

Take a note of the opening and closing hours as well as the Public holidays. The gallery remains closed on Mondays.

The Adoration of the Magi by Gentile da Fabriano

Be an early bird please! Uffizi gets very crowded as the day progresses and even with a Skip-The-Line ticket, you might need to wait in a queue.

Book your yickets online from the official website or from any of the tour companies and reach Uffizi before the Opening hour (8:15AM) to beat the crowd.

As the day progresses the crowd builds up with more and more tourist groups turning up.

The crowd wanes towards 4:00 PM. But turning up so late also means that you will need to finish the gallery tour with 2/2.5 hours keeping on mind the closing time.

Guide to Uffizi Gallery-Florence--Must see artworks

The Uffizi is U-shaped and huge, with over 100 rooms and thousands of works of art. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, it is best to have an idea of the layout of the gallery.

Example : The most well-known artworks are in the 2nd floor and it would be a good idea to start the tour from there and then move on to the 1st floor.   You can prioritize the artworks you want to see, and decide which rooms you want to spend more time in.

Pro-Tip : Pick up the ‘The Uffizi’ Information booklet from the ticket office which has the latest layout and which artwork is present in which room. The officials at Uffizi shuffle the rooms sometimes and the latest information will always be there in the official booklet.

4. Listen to Rick Steve’s Free Audio Guide

River ARno from Uffizi Gallery Florence
A view of River Arno from Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Prior to your visit to the Uffizi gallery, a highly recommended preparation action would be to listen to Rick Steve’s Audio Guide about Uffizi

I cannot emphasize enough how helpful this audio guide is. This is the best way to prep and prime your visit to the Uffizi.

5. Take a Guided tour

Uffizi Gallery is the perfect place to take a guided tour. To ease the overwhelm,  The tour guide will help you learn more about the artworks and the history of the Uffizi Gallery. They can provide you with valuable insights and make your visit more enjoyable.

6. Dress appropriately

The Uffizi Gallery has a dress code, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately. Avoid wearing shorts, tank tops, or revealing clothing. Also, wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

7. Do not miss the coffee with a view at the 2nd floor of Uffizi

The cafeteria is located right above the Loggia dei Lanzi, and has a magnificent view of Piazza della Signoria. You also get to see the golden dome of the Duomo from the seating area.  The seating area overlooks the city, providing a breathtaking backdrop for your meal.

One of the best things about the cafeteria is that it offers a much-needed break from the crowds and hustle and bustle of the museum.

So, come back to 2nd floor to grab a cup of cappuccino and a portion of pasta after your gallery tour. This is the perfect setting to process all the magnificent artworks you just saw!

One thing that I loved about the Italians is how much importance they provide to the minute details and invest the effort to retain the relics of the past. The film streamed at Uffizi Gallery showcases this – how large paintings are transported with lot of care and how the Master artists restore the artworks.

It is a must-watch to get to know the effort and investment that goes to maintain these masterpieces.

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy is one of the most renowned art museums in the world.

If you’re planning a trip to Florence and want to visit the Uffizi Gallery, the best time to go is during the off-season, which is from November to February. During this time, the crowds are smaller and you can enjoy the art in a more peaceful and relaxed environment.

However, if you prefer to visit during the high season, which is from March to October, it’s best to book your tickets in advance to avoid long lines and wait times. Additionally, visiting early in the morning or in the late afternoon can also help you avoid some of the crowds.

No matter what time of year you choose to visit the Uffizi Gallery, you’re sure to be blown away by the incredible artworks on display. From Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” to Michelangelo’s “Doni Tondo,” the Uffizi Gallery is a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces that will leave you in awe.

1. The Birth Of Venus By Sandro Botticelli in Hall 10/14

The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli

Perhaps the most celebrated painting in the whole of Uffizi Gallery is the Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. My reason of visiting the Uffizi Gallery was to see this masterpiece with my own eyes and it was a dream come true!

You’ll be in awe of just how large the work is. Standing in front of Botticelli’s masterpiece, visitors are struck by a painting that is nearly three meters (10 feet) wide! It is certainly more awe-inspiring than the underwhelming Monalisa in the Louvre museum (unpopular opinion!)

The painting is believed to have been created in the 1480s, during the Italian Renaissance period. The painting depicts the goddess Venus, who is seen emerging from the sea on a shell, as a symbol of her birth. She is surrounded by other figures, including the god of the winds, Zephyr, and the nymph, Chloris.

The painting is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance art, known for its use of color, composition, and symbolism. The figure of Venus is depicted in a graceful and idealized manner, reflecting the Renaissance fascination with classical ideals of beauty and perfection. The painting has been interpreted in many ways, with some seeing it as a celebration of the beauty and sensuality of the female form, while others see it as a symbolic representation of the human soul’s journey toward enlightenment.

Today, The Birth of Venus remains one of the most famous and iconic paintings in the world,. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the enduring power of Renaissance art, and its ability to capture the imagination and inspire awe and wonder in viewers of all ages and backgrounds.

2. La Primavera by Sandro Botticelli

La Primavera-Sandro Botticelli-Must see artwork in Uffizi Gallery florence
La Primavera by Sandro Botticelli

La Primavera, which means “Spring” in Italian, is another celebrated masterpiece painted by Sandro Botticelli during the early Renaissance period and can be found in the same Hall 10/14. The painting depicts a group of mythological figures in a garden, and it is filled with symbolism and allegory.

The central figure in the painting is Venus, the Roman goddess of love, who is standing in the center of the painting and is surrounded by a group of figures. The painting is known for its vibrant colors, intricate details, and the use of linear perspective. It is a testament to the skill and imagination of Botticelli.

3. Portraits Of The Duke And Duchess Of Urbino

The Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino are a pair of paintings by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. These portraits, painted around 1465-1472, are regarded as one of the most famous and important works of the Renaissance period. Together, these portraits are an exquisite example of Renaissance portraiture, showcasing the artist’s skill in capturing the likeness and character of his sitters. They also provide a valuable insight into the lives and status of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino, who were prominent figures in the Italian city-states during this period.

4. The Shield With the Head of Medusa By Caravaggio

In Hall 90, you’ll find three of Caravaggio’s most famous paintings: Medusa, The Sacrifice of Isaac, and Bacchus. Out of  these three, Medusa is one of the most sought-after pieces in the entire museum. Fun fact: rumor has it that the face of Medusa might have been a self-portrait of Caravaggio when he was young.

Caravaggio was the most important and influential Baroque artist of his time. As our tour guide said , he acted like a devil, but painted like an angel.

The painting “Medusa” by Caravaggio is a strikingly realistic portrayal of the infamous character from Greek mythology. Her eyes are wide with fear and anger, her mouth open in a silent scream, and her serpentine hair writhes around her as if alive. The background is painted in a muted brown and gray, contrasting with the vibrant colors of Medusa’s dress and the snakes in her hair.

The painting is a powerful and dramatic representation of one of the most iconic figures from classical mythology. If you have the chance to visit the Uffizi Gallery, it is definitely worth taking a closer look at this masterpiece.

5. Ognissanti [Enthroned] Madonna by Giotto

The “Ognissanti Madonna” by Giotto is a masterpiece of art that epitomizes the elegance and refinement of the Renaissance.

This painting is a panel painting that dates back to the early 14th century and is considered one of the earliest examples of the Renaissance art movement. It the Virgin Mary seated on a throne with the infant Jesus on her lap. The figures are surrounded by a group of angels and saints.

It is a testament to the skill and artistic vision of Giotto, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of the early Renaissance period.

6. Works of Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci’s works also have their own climate-controlled room in the Uffizi. The recently restored (but unfinished) Adoration of the Magi is the centerpiece. It was commissioned by Augustinian monks in 1481 and was supposed to be completed in 30 months. Instead, what we have here is a fabulous glimpse at Da Vinci’s creative process.

7. Works of Michelangelo

One of the most popular attractions is located on the second floor in hall number 35, where the works of Michelangelo are on display. Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo is a circular painting of the Holy Family, and it’s one of the highlights of the gallery. It’s also the only confirmed panel painting by Michelangelo that exists today.

8. Works of Raphael

Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raphael - Must See artwork in Uffizi Gallery Florence

Hall Number 66 is dedicated to the artwork Raphael of which Madonna of the Goldfinch is the most celebrated one. Raphael is considered one of the greatest artists of all time, known for his skillful use of perspective, composition, and color.

Madonna of the Goldfinch, which depicts Mary with baby Jesus and John the Baptist is  a painting  known for its vivid colors and intricate details, and it’s definitely worth a close study.

9. Venus of Urbino

Venus of Urbino- Titian-Must see artwork in Uffizi Gallery florence
Venus of Urbino by Italian painter Titian

The Venus of Urbino is a famous painting by Italian artist Titian,. The painting depicts a reclining nude woman who is believed to be a courtesan or bride. She lies on a couch, with her head resting on a pillow and her body partially covered by a white sheet.

The painting is known for its sensuality and attention to detail, particularly in the way that Titian has depicted the woman’s skin and the folds in the sheet. The painting has been the subject of much debate and interpretation over the years, with some seeing it as a celebration of the female form, while others view it as an objectification of women.

Despite the controversy surrounding the painting, it remains an important work of art and a popular attraction at the Uffizi Gallery. Visitors can marvel at the skill and technique of one of Italy’s greatest artists, and experience the beauty and sensuality of the Venus of Urbino for themselves.

Dev Deepavali- Varanasi

Imagine a world shimmering with the glow of millions of flickering oil lamps, where darkness is banished and radiance reigns supreme. Welcome to Varanasi, India, where the majestic celebration of Dev Deepawali transports you to a realm where light triumphs over darkness in the most mesmerizing way possible.

I was fortunate to be part of the extraordinary celebrations of Dev Deepawali during my trip to Varanasi.

In this blog post, I will be sharing how you can experience this magical spectacle in the ethereal ambiance of the holy Ganges River and embrace the divine aura that permeates through every corner of the city.

The History And Significance Of Dev Deepawali

Varanasi-Dev Deepavali preparation-Ghat

The history and significance of Dev Deepawali in Varanasi go back centuries, rooted in the rich cultural heritage of India. This ancient festival is a time-honored tradition that commemorates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Dev Deepawali, also known as the Dev Diwali, Diwali of the Gods, is celebrated on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima, which falls fifteen days after the main Diwali festival.

The origins of Dev Deepawali can be traced back to ancient Hindu scriptures and mythology, where it is mentioned as a time when the gods rejoiced and illuminated the heavens with diyas (oil lamps) to mark Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon king Tripurasura. This victory signifies the triumph of righteousness over evil forces and serves as a reminder of the eternal cosmic balance.

This celebration also serves as a time for reflection and introspection, as people seek spiritual enlightenment and strive to purify their souls. It is believed that on this sacred day, the divine energy is at its peak, and prayers and offerings made during Dev Deepawali hold special significance for the devotees.

How To Experience Dev Deepawali In Varanasi

Dev Deepawali is usually celebrated in November, so make sure you plan your visit accordingly. Book your accommodation and transportation well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles. the festival is attended by thousands of visitors from within India and abroad apart from Varanasi locals.

You will get to experience the grandeur of the festival with vibrant processions, as the city comes alive with lively music, dancing, and joyful celebrations that fill the streets.

These vibrant processions are an integral part of Dev Deepawali, adding an extra layer of vivacity to the already mesmerizing atmosphere. As night falls and the city shimmers with countless diyas (oil lamps) adorning the Ganges River and its ghats, the streets become a stage for exuberant revelry. The procession, led by a statue of Lord Shiva, gracefully parades through the city, making its way along the riverbanks.

And while you can always immerse yourself in the festivities by being part of the crowd one of the best ways to experience Dev Deepavali is by taking a boat ride on the river Ganges.

The Alakananda Cruise is a popular option among travelers, which offers a luxurious and comfortable way to witness the grandeur of the festival. The cruise takes you on a journey along the river, allowing you to witness the beautifully lit ghats and the cultural programs being performed.

Alakanada Cruise Varanasi - Vivekanada Cruise

The officials of the cruise will be in touch with you (on phone, email and WhasApp) providing instructions on when to reach the boarding station. Usually, on the day of Dev Deepawali, there is a bit of traffic jam in the city and barricades in different areas, due to which you will be instructed to reach the boarding point at least 2 hours before the actual cruise start time.

Boarding point: Sant Ravidas Ghat

Timing: 5 PM to 8 PM. You will be required to reach Sant Ravi Das Ghat by 3 PM itself.

I reached the boarding point much before 3 PM to avoid any last minute rush. The access to Sant Ravidas Ghat is via a huge and beautiful park. When I reached the Ghat via the park, locals were already decorating the Ghats with Diyas.

It was quite a long wait. But the pre-evening preparations were in full swing and that’s what was worth the wait.

As the sun sets and darkness blankets the city, the banks of the Ganges come alive.

Alaknanda Cruise-Dev Deepavali-Decoration-Deck

The cruise has two decks. As soon as you board the beautifully decorated cruise, go to the upper deck and settle down in one of the river-side seats (the seat actually doesn’t matter though).

There was a beautifully decorated photo booth where guests were clicking photos.

While being seated, I was observing the activities across the Ghats. I could see several beautifully decorated small boats all getting decked up to provide the best experience to the guests. And there were several pre-booked boats for private parties.

The cruise started at around 5:30 PM and as it sailed through the preparation of Dev Deepawali celebrations unfolded in front of us across various ghats came alive.

The cruise took us along the ghats and what a great opportunity it was. The illuminations in each of the Ghats are different from each other

The famous Ganga Arti at the Dashashwamedh Ghat is performed by 21 priests on the evening of Dev Deepawali. The cruise took us closer to Dashashwamedh Ghat during the evening aarti.

And oh!! What a spectacle it was.

Just after the Aarti, there was a 20-minute Light-and sound with projection holographic show at ChetSingh Ghat, It depicted religious narratives by connecting them to Kashi-Vishwanath-Ganga.

The Breathtaking Fireworks

As the first sparks light up the night sky, a collective gasp escapes the lips of the onlookers. Each explosion brings forth a burst of color and light, illuminating the river Ganges and reflecting on its gentle waves. The fireworks seem to dance and twirl through the air, creating a symphony of light that is as enchanting as the music.

The upper deck of Alaknanda cruise is the best vantage point to experience this beautiful display of fireworks.
